Preparing your Quilt Top for Longarm Quilting
Proper preparation of your quilt top and quilt back is essential to a good result, so please read the following instructions carefully!
- Do NOT pin or baste any of the layers together.
- Quilt top should be trimmed down to the final finished size. We will not cut or trim your quilt prior to quilting. We only will trim the quilt after the quilting process is finished if desired. We will trim up to the quilt top edge at no charge. If returning quilt by mail, we return extra backing material if desired but not the excess batting.
- Backing and the Batting must be a minimum of 4" larger than Quilt top on all sides. That's a total of 8" longer and wider than quilt top. If piecing backing, use 1/2" seams for stability. Square backing and batting. Make sure that backing and batting are at least 8" longer and wider than Quilt top after squaring. (Backing must be square!!) For Example, your Quilt top measures 60" x 80", the batting and the backing should measure at least 68" x 88" if not larger.
- If your Quilt top does not or does have an outside border, we recommend that you stay stitch 1/8" around the entire edge of your Quilt. This secures the edge seams from coming undone. The stitching will be hidden by your binding.
- Remove all loose threads from the back and front of your Quilt. Threads can show through the quilt top and back, detracting from the beauty of your Quilt.
- Remove all pins, buttons, sequins, crystals and any other embellishments from your Quilt top.
- Remove all cat or dog hair from quilt. Make sure that there is no smoke or urine odor in the quilt. Basically PLEASE send only clean quilts.
- Press your Quilt top and backing fabric with seams open or to one side. (To make sure there are no pleats or tucks pressed in at the seam lines, press from the right side.)
- Measure your Quilt across the top, bottom and center. All of these measurements should be the same to ensure puckers don't occur in the quilting process. If your borders don't lie flat, tucks, pleats or fullness can occur when quilting.
- Mark the "TOP" of your Quilt top and Quilt Backing on the right sides by pinning a piece of paper labeled top. The top is the part that is at the head of the bed or the top of a wall hanging.
- Fold Quilt Top and Quilt Backing carefully to prevent wrinkling.
